- Commander's Log: Stardate 47346.0
-
- After reaching the demilitarised zone, we can now only wait for the
- hunter to show itself. Being this close to the Cardassian boarder has
- made the entire crew tense. Due to the damage sustained in our
- encounter with the hunter, we are unable to properly defend
- ourselves. Lieutenant Hermandez is confident that the weapons will be
- back on line within the hour. We can only hope that we avoid a
- conflict with either the hunter or the Cardassians before then. Chief
- Gart is currently working on a device which will counteract the
- hunter's powerful shields. We are confident that it will be ready in
- time for the inevitable battle.
-
-
- Halk switched off her log recorder on the armrest of her chair. She
- stood up and made her way towards the science computer. Karma,
- glanced up at her and then resumed her vigil on the graphic displayed
- infront of her.
-
- "What have you made out of those scans we took?"
-
- "As you know, Lieutenant Gart is working on a weapon to overcome the
- shields employed by the hunter. I have downloaded all the data
- compiled by the computer and sent it to engineering." She said.
-
- "What exactly is the problem with their shields?" Halk inquired.
-
- "They seem to operate on a multi-dimensional level. As we knock down
- the shields in this dimension, they are suplimented with those from
- one of the others."
-
- "How many dimensions are we talking?"
-
- "Probably infinite."
-
- "Great." She said sarcastically.
-
- "If we can devise a weapon which will detonate simultaneously in
- those dimensions as well as this one then we should have a chance at
- this." Karma summarised.
-
- Halk stared at a list of elements which scrolled vertically to one
- side of the display. She couldn't identify any of them.
-
- Seeing her confusion, Karma pointed to the list. "The hull seems to
- be comprised of a metallic structure unlike anything we've ever
- encountered."
-
- "Extra-galactic?" Halk proposed.
-
- "Probably, unless we find anything like this from either Gamma or
- Delta Quadrants." she replied.
-
- "Gamma Quadrant..." Halk thought for a momment. "Establish a link
- with the DS Nine database, see what they have." Halk ordered.
-
- Turning back to the command chair, Halk saw the aft section of the
- bridge again. The Vanguard was going to need months in drydock after
- this.

-
- "The hunter is leaving Cardassian border." Murvek announced.
-
- Seated on the bridge, Ocett listened to him.The political officer was
- already in place next to her. When she had destroyed the hunter, the
- Central Command would be more ready to accept her ideas.
-
- "Lock onto its course and pursue, warp factor nine." Ocett ordered.
-
- "Sir, that will take us into the demilitarised zone." Murvek warned.
-
- "We have a mission to complete!" Ocett snapped. "Don't disgrace
- yourself infront of Bujim Gervak like the worm you are!"
-
- Murvek became aware of the political officer's steely glare.
- Reluctantly he punched in the controls and launched the ship into
- warp. "You realise you will instigate war with the Federation."
-
- Ocett eyed him uncertanly. Was he pointing out a fact or challenging
- her? Then she smiled, an act which unerved Murvek the most.
-
- "Every career move has it's cost." She said, still smiling.

-
- Karma had just raised her seat and sat down at Ops when the
- proximity alarm sounded.
-
- She turned to Halk in the command chair. "Unknown vessel entering
- demilitarised zone, it's the hunter."
-
- Halk stiffened, this was it. "Shields up, red alert!" she called out.
-
- Hermandez ran onto the bridge. Crossing instantly to her tactical
- station, she relieved the man on duty and readied herself.
-
- "Captain to the bridge." Halk called over the comm-channal
-
- "The hunter is attacking a passenger ship in the zone, the colonies
- are calling for help." Karma called.
-
- "Damn!" Halk cursed.
-
- Karma spoke up again. "Another vessel entering zone, Commander it's a
- Cardassian warship!"
-
- Halk grimaced. "Well if the treaty's broken, we might as well give
- the bureaucrats something to really work on." She turned to helm,
- "Set intercept course to the hunter."
-
- Dean carried out the order. "Ready sir."
-
- "Comendation or court martial here I come!" Halk muttered.
-
- The Vanguard crossed the boarder.
-
- * * *
-
- The Secatuer dropped out of warp infront of the hunter, in time to
- watch an unshielded civilian passenger ship blow to pieces. Phasers
- and photon torpedoes lanced out - exploding with some effect on the
- hunter. It responded with its own fire power, stripping the warship's
- shields away like layers of tissue paper. The Vanguard steered in
- under impulse power and began firing phasers. The combined firepower
- began to visibly damage the shields as they flickered dangerously.
-
- Onboard the Vanguard, Warner had just stepped onto the bridge.
- "Status!" He called.
-
- "Currently firing weapons at the hunter sir, we are having some
- effect." Hermandez replied.
-
- "Galor class warship has entered zone and is now firing on the
- hunter." Halk added.
-
- Warner turned on her. "Who entered the demilitarized zone first? Us
- or the Cardassians?"
-
- "They did sir." Halk responded instantly. "I wouldn't have risked the
- treaty otherwise without consulting with you."
-
- Warner smiled slightly."Understood number one."
-
- "Hunter is transfering power to it's shields." Karma replied.
-
- Warner slapped his communicator."Warner to Gart, how's the weapon?"
-
- "Nearly ready captain." Gart replied."I need five minutes to prepare
- the shuttles engines and -"
-
- "We don't have five minutes!" Warner replied.
-
- The deck shook violently. Warner glanced at the viewscreen, the
- hunter was now firing its weapons at the Vanguard.
-
- "Shields at fourty percent!" Hermandez shouted over the din.
-
- Warner hit his combadge again. "Chief, we need the weapon now. In
- five minutes this ship is gonna be slag!"
-
- Another hit slammed into the ship, this time Warner fell to the
- floor. Ops exploded in a shower of sparks, Karma flying clear just in
- time. She rushed across to the science station.
-
- "Computer, reconfigure the science station to Ops!" She ordered. In a
- second the displays had changed to the familiar layout of her
- station.
-
- "Where were we hit?" Warner demanded.
-
- Hermandez shot off another volly of torpedoes and then replied."Decks
- twenty-four and twenty-five have sustained heavy hull damage. I
- estimate explosive decompression in two minutes."
-
- "Begin evacuation procedures Number one." Warner called over to Halk.
-
- Gart's voice crackled over the comm-channel. "Multi-dimensional
- antiproton device stowed on the Edward Jackson." He reported. "Just
- give the word captain, the shields need to be dropped."
-
- "Lieutenant, get us out of here!" Warner called to Dean.
-
- With a roar, the Vanguard's engines forced the starship out of the
- huter's immediate fire arc.
-
- "Tactical, drop the shields." Gart called over the comm.
- Hermandez looked up at Warner. "Shields down." She confirmed.
-
- "Okay Chief, she's all yours." he called.
-
- Making sure the controls were set, Gart swung the shuttlecraft's door
- shut. Now wasn't the time for the graceful, but slow automated
- sequence. He punched the controls on hiis padd and jogged out of the
- bay. The shuttle climbed into the air and engaged it's thrusters. The
- pre-programmed flight path was now underway. With a final glance back
- at his invention, Gart made his way to main engineering.
-
- On the viewscreen, the bridge crew watched as the shuttle climbed
- towards the hunter. Pre-occupied with swatting the Secatur, the
- hunter was oblivious of the tiny shuttle darting towards him.
-
- "In case the hunter sees the shuttle, I think it's time we help the
- Cardassians and keep it busy." Warner announced.
-
- "Shields are back up. They're at fifty three percent and rising."
- Halk replied.
-
- Hermandez primed the ships weapons again. "Port photon launcher has
- overheated and shut down again. Damage control teams are checking on
- it."
-
- Karma called over to Hermandez. "Lieutenant, I've modulated a
- subspace dampening field around the ship. With a repeated kedium
- pulse from the deflector dish, we might be able to partially blind
- it's sensors."
-
- "How soon can you get the deflector modified?" Warner asked.
-
- "That's part of the beauty of the whole idea. Stellar cartography
- have a kedium pulse emitter in the deflector room anyway. I just need
- to tell the computer to bring it on line." Karma enthused.
-
- "Do it." Warner snapped.
-
- A large portion of the Cardassian ship's hull blew off and tumbled
- into space. Small explosions began to detonate across the Secatur's
- long tail section. The ship began to list.
-
- "Looks like we're on our own." Halk muttered.
-
- "I prefer it that way." Hermandez replied.
-
- Warner shot them both a look. "Other than destroying the bridge's
- moral, is there anything else you should be doing... like firing the
- weapons?"
-
- Karma spoke up from the new Ops station. "The shuttle has stopped. I
- can't obtain a link with it's computer."
-
- Warner cursed silently. "See if Gart can recall it." He ordered.
-
- "Kedium pulse and subspace field ready!" Karma announced.
-
- "Firing." Hermanez replied.
-
- The hunter began to fire on the Vanguard. The occasional shot hit the
- ship, but most went wide. It began to approach.
-
- "It's trying to get within closer range." Hermandez reported.
-
- "Could it have a clear shot if it gets closer?" Warner asked.
-
- The ship rocked as another blast struck it.
-
- "You call that an unclear shot!" Hermandez gasped.
-
- Karma ignored her. "Yes, as the ship get's closer, so the kedium
- pulse becomes more focused on a single area of the ship."
-
- "I know a way." Halk said quickly.
-
- Warner looked at her puzzled."To do what?"
-
- "Sir, permission to beam across to the shuttle and pilot it
- manually." she asked.
-
- Warner considered this for a moment, Halk was already at the
- turbolift doors.
-
- "Request denied Number one." Warner decided.
-
- "But sir -"
-
- "It's too dangerous. We couldn't get you off the shuttle in time
- before it explodes. Besides we don't know why the shuttle stopped,
- there could be a malfunction in the engines."
-
- "If I'm on the shuttle at least I can tell you what the situation is.
- Please sir, it's our last chance." She pleaded.
-
- "I'm sorry Lyrinda, my decision is still no." Warner replied.
-
- Robert Dean continued to stare at the viewscreen throughout the
- entire exchange between his senior officers. Suddenly he noticed
- something.
-
- "It's going to hit the shuttlecraft anyway!" He called.
-
- "What!" Warner snapped, surprused at the turn of events.
-
- "Detonate the shuttle!" Halk ordered.
-
- Karma slammed her hand down on the appropriate control.
-
- The shuttle exploded.
